I was well on my way to becoming a lawyer when I discovered creative writing in a class at the University of Minnesota in the early 1990’s. I took a fiction-writing class with Alexs Pate, the author of five novels including Amistad. He was working on his first novel at the time.

During that time, I  started writing short stories of my own but but I continued with my legal studies attending the  University of South Dakota School of Law. Later I joined Johnson, Heidepriem & Abdallah in Sioux Falls. There I did a lot of writing—legal briefs and such—but it was a far cry from writing fiction.

A few years ago I decided to take a look at the stories I had written at the University of Minnesota. Frankly, they needed a lot of work. But there were aspects of them worth saving. So I rewrote the old ones and wrote new ones. Many of these are now in my first collection, The Sense of Touch.
