Wouldn't it be great if you could search for a resume sample online and find an example of a resume that had everything you have done in your career just the way a resume writer would have written it? Okay, so you're not that unrealistic. You know we're not living in a perfect world. All you really want is some inspiration and to find a few good sentences to borrow to make your life easier. Ten years ago, the prospect of finding a good resume sample online was a daunting task, and to a large extent still is with the exception of a few. Many of the websites offering resume samples charged a non-refundable fee for the privilege before seeing the product. These sites are still around, but have some stiff competition – free resume sample sites such as Sample Resume Templates that offer hundreds of free resume samples for many job titles. When you think about it, why would anyone pay for 250 resume samples when they only need a few good ones? This is obviously a better resource for a resume writer than it is for a job seeker.
A resume sample of a college professor would is be germane to most job-seekers since it would not reflect their unique ability, training, education, and experience. Rather, the important elements in a professional educational resume should be examined. These elements include the look of a resume, its effectiveness, and the ease of extracting the important information. Usually, we submit a resume in support of an application. The resume reflects who you are and how qualified you are to handle the job. Therefore, it should be a ”professional” document. You would probably not hire a person who did not care enough about a position to properly edit their resume. A written document can be a reflection of your character. A poorly prepared resume reflects a lackadaisical attitude and a lack of professionalism. It indicates that you may not be able to rely on this person when it counts. When possible, you should have a resume professionally prepared to be certain that you are being presented as well as is possible.
How Should You Use Those Free Resume Samples? You don't need to be afraid of the free resume samples that you might find on the internet. Check them out, by all means. But instead of copying text verbatim, put those samples to better use by studying the different formats (the style and structure of the resume, including the breakdown of categories) and the content – with respect to the way the author chose to phrase responsibilities, accomplishments, etc. Use resume samples as a source from which to glean ideas, and as an opportunity to immerse yourself in the language of the craft. Take the lessons learned from studying those samples, and apply those lessons with originality toward the crafting of your own document. By avoiding the look-alike text that every Tom, Dick and Harry has glommed onto, you're more likely to build a professional tribute to an actual individual, and subsequently attract the eye of a hiring official. And that's the goal.
